Boris Lekar. PREFACE
(Hereinafter texts from an album of reproductions - Kiev, institute of
Jewish Studies 1999)
It was not an accident that my self-portrait was placed on the cover of
this edition, a self-portrait painted in Kiev a long time ago, when I was
young, and supplemented with a silhouette of an old man's beard and
mustache - painted recently, for one of the latest conceptual exhibitions
in Jerusalem with an extravagant title «Artist Designing His Own
Headstone».
Many years have passed unnoticeably, quite a long path has been covered.
And in the searching for this path, the greatest value for me, at least in
the field of arts, has been its spirit, a touch with the Infinite, Endless
and subsequently with a great mystery, which has never been unraveled to
the end. Different artists pursue this goal in different ways, but as for
me, I have been trying -for may years already - to come closer somehow to
the mystery through the light, for it is written in the Torah: «ln Thy
Light shall we see Light». For me light carries not only spirit, but also
the Good, including in our common human understanding of it. On top of
that, light is one of the manifestations of life. Quite, peaceful, but
Spirit-filled life is my ideal and the ideal for my path. I would like to
believe that some parts of this path, the path of creativity of the
architect, sculptor and, first and foremost, painter, would be reflected
in this edition.
From the bottom of my heart I am grateful to its initiator and organizer
Leonid Finberg as well as to my friends Yakov Barsuk, Mikhail Batalin,
Viacheslav Dubenets and all those who assisted in the publishing of this,
as I hope, interim «report on the work done over the reported period»..
